Moscow: During negotiations with Hamas in Moscow on Friday, Russia encouraged the group to free all of its detainees, claiming that the humanitarian situation in Gaza had reached “catastrophic” proportions.
Russia urges Hamas: In discussions with Hamas senior official Musa Abu Marzouk, Russian diplomat Mikhail Bogdanov “emphasised the need for the speedy release of civilians captured during the attacks of October 7,” the foreign ministry said.
The talks were “to clarify the movement’s position and policies for dealing with the file of prisoners” that the Palestinian organisation was holding, according to a statement it released.
The statement further stated that Bogdanov had stated Russia’s “support of the rights of the Palestinian people” and that they had talked about establishing a truce in the besieged area.
About 1,140 persons in Israel lost their lives as a result of assaults carried out by Hamas fighters on October 7, the majority of them were civilians, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli numbers.
Israel has promised to eradicate Hamas.
According to the health ministry of the territory, at least 24,762 people have died in Gaza as a result of its military response, with women, small children, and teenagers accounting for around 70% of the deaths.
