In an effort to reduce smog, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has mandated that all Punjabi schools and institutions be closed on November 18. For employers, the court also suggested a two-day remote work period.
LHC orders closure of schools: On November 1, the Punjab caretaker administration declared a “smog emergency” in response to the LHC’s order to take immediate action to control the harmful air quality, which is rated as “poor.”
Justice Shahid Karim had stated during the previous hearing that the current level of smog is the government’s fault.
Recent days have seen a severe pollution issue in Eastern Punjab, with Lahore’s Air Quality Index standing at 134.
The daily air quality is reported using the Air Quality Index (AQI). It indicates the level of pollution or cleanliness of the air as well as any potential health risks. At the moment, Peshawar’s AQI is 194 and Karachi’s is 158.
“All schools and colleges will remain closed on Saturdays,” Justice Karim declared today while hearing a petition regarding smog. The guideline on working from home should be adhered to twice a week, according to Justice Shahid Karim.
Commissioner Lahore has not been able to keep the haze in the city under control, according to Justice Karim. Justice Karim remarked, “Every time Commissioner Lahore comes here, he makes promises that he cannot keep.”
The District Commissioners of Jhang, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Nankana, Bahawalnagar, and Sheikhupura must be removed right now, the judge said, citing the distressing nature of the agricultural residue burning films.
Further, Justice Karim stated, “Chief Secretary Punjab should issue notification to transfer these officers.”
Additionally, the judge suggested that the government give its local employees electric motorcycles.
Wednesday was set as the new date for the hearing.
