Turkey’s Olympic pistol shooter Yusuf Dikec has applied to trademark his viral stance from the Paris Games, his coach Erdinc Bilgili revealed to AFP on Monday. This move follows attempts by others to trademark Dikec’s iconic pose without his consent, prompting the application with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.
Bilgili explained that after learning of several unauthorized trademark efforts, they submitted their own application about a week ago, successfully blocking the other attempts. Dikec’s calm and composed posture, which went viral online, inspired a wave of memes, with comparisons to James Bond and even a video from Tesla founder Elon Musk mimicking the pose.
Dikec’s stance, which he adopted to maintain body stability, has also been imitated by fellow athletes and even Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson during a goal celebration in the English Premier League. Turkish news outlet TRT Haber reported that various merchandise featuring Dikec’s likeness, including T-shirts, mugs, and phone cases, have already hit the market. Despite the viral fame, Dikec explained to AFP in early August that the hand-in-pocket technique was simply a way to improve his balance.
