Jay Shah, currently serving as the honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been elected unopposed as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the governing body confirmed on Tuesday.
Shah, who has held the position of BCCI secretary since October 2019 and has chaired the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, will officially assume the ICC chairmanship on December 1, 2024. He will be succeeding Greg Barclay, who was elected in November 2020. Shah was the only candidate nominated for the role.
Following his election, Shah expressed his commitment to expanding cricket’s global presence, particularly as the sport is set to be included in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
“I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah said. “I am dedicated to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. At this crucial time, it is vital to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, embrace advanced technologies, and introduce our major events to new global markets. Our objective is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”
Shah emphasized the importance of building on past successes while also embracing new ideas and innovation to grow the sport worldwide. He highlighted the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Olympics as a pivotal moment for the sport’s expansion and expressed confidence that it would propel cricket forward in unprecedented ways.
At 35, Shah will become the youngest chairman in ICC history. His appointment comes at a time of uncertainty regarding India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan from February to March next year.
