WhatsApp group chats expire: There’s a new feature you might like if you’ve ever started or joined a WhatsApp group conversation for a single event but kept forgetting to delete it for years thereafter. A new iOS beta discovered by WaBetaInfo indicates that WhatsApp is testing “Expiring Groups,” which will allow you to choose an expiration date for group discussions.
The Expiring Groups option will show up in the group’s settings, where you may select options like a day, week, or custom date, as seen in the screenshot. If you want to keep the chat going, you can also prevent an expiration from happening. The group may still exist, but without you. Any expiration dates set will seemingly only apply to you and not other participants.
Since the description specifies that “WhatsApp will prompt you to clean up groups on the expiration date,” it appears that WhatsApp will not destroy a group without informing you first. But, it should help clear up the clutter in your account and conserve some device storage space, much like vanishing messages.
