As Pakistan grapples with a series of consecutive terrorist attacks, both the United States and China have expressed strong condemnation of the latest violence in Balochistan, pledging their support to Pakistan in its fight against terrorism.
On Monday, Balochistan experienced one of the deadliest attacks in recent times, leaving over 50 people dead, including civilians, police, and military personnel, in a single day. These attacks sent shockwaves throughout the country, prompting widespread condemnation from both the government and international communities.
China, a long-standing regional ally of Pakistan, expressed deep sorrow over the attacks in the resource-rich southwestern province, which hosts significant China-led projects like a port and a gold and copper mine. A spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, during a regular press briefing on Tuesday, strongly condemned the attacks and reiterated China’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s anti-terrorism efforts.
“China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism. We will continue to provide steadfast support to Pakistan in its efforts to combat terrorism, maintain social cohesion and stability, and protect its citizens,” said Lin Jian. He also emphasized China’s commitment to further strengthening counter-terrorism and security cooperation with Pakistan to jointly ensure peace and security in the region.
Similarly, the United States expressed deep regret over the loss of lives, including law enforcement and civilians, in Balochistan’s Musakhail and other areas. “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those killed in yesterday’s attacks. The United States will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Pakistan in its fight against terrorism,” the US embassy in Islamabad posted on its official X account.
The European Union also condemned the brutal attacks in Balochistan. EU Commission Spokesperson Nabila Massrali stated on X that “terrorism and violence in any form have no place. They threaten the foundations of democracy. Our thoughts are with those affected by this senseless act.”
The attacks on Monday were carried out by militants linked to the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), targeting civilians, police, and security forces. In response, security forces killed 21 terrorists and injured several others.
Pakistan has seen a significant increase in militant attacks since the Taliban’s return to power in neighboring Afghanistan in 2021, particularly in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as in southwestern Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran.
Last year, Balochistan witnessed at least 170 militant attacks, resulting in the deaths of 151 civilians and 114 security personnel, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies.
In light of the escalating security situation, the federal cabinet approved Operation Azm-e-Istehkam in June this year, a renewed national counter-terrorism initiative following the Central Apex Committee’s recommendations under the National Action Plan to eradicate terrorism.
