LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has mandated that transgender inmates be given separate cells in jails.
Justice Baqir Najfi issued the orders while deliberating over a matter involving the availability of facilities for inmates, particularly transgender people, in the jail.
The complainant said in his plea that the lack of separate barracks causes transgender people to experience “humiliation.”
Justice Baqir Najfi issued an order to ensure that transgender inmates in jails have access to a separate cell after hearing opening arguments. While calling for a progress report on its orders, the court postponed the case’s hearing until January 20.
The Benazir Kafalat Programme (BKP) of the Benazir Income Support Programme was previously expanded to cover transgender people (BISP).
Shazia Marri, the head of BISP, made the announcement that transgender people will now be eligible to receive benefits from the Benazir Kafalat Program in a video statement released on Saturday (BKP).
Shazia Marri described the passage of the transgender policy as a “landmark achievement” and noted that the government had a duty to make accommodations for the transgender population since they were a part of society.
