Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan across all formats, won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy as the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year for 2022.
Babar, who has previously crowned ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year, has now staked his claim for the most coveted ICC title, defeating the other three contenders, Ben Stokes of England, Tim Southee of New Zealand, and Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe.
In the meantime, the great batter followed fast bowler Shaheen Afridi, who won the honor last year, as the second Pakistani athlete to win the renowned Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy.
Babar had a memorable year at the plate because he was the only player to surpass the 2000-run threshold in 2022. 8 centuries and 15 fifties were among his 2598 runs from 44 games, which came at an average of 54.12.
According to an ICC press release on Thursday, the recipient of the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year “had a year to remember in 2022.”
The 28-year-old, who has been leading the ODI chart since July 2021, is in the top five rankings in each format and, in addition to heading the ICC ODI Team of the Year for the second time in his career, his steady efforts earned him a spot in the ICC Test Team of the Year.
The 2021 ICC Men’s ODI Player of the Year dominated the 50-over format, scoring 679 runs in nine games. He demonstrated his consistency by recording scores of 50 or more in eight of those innings. His dominant position in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings and his consistent performance in the 50-over format came as no surprise when the 28-year-old was named the ICC Men’s ODI Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.
