Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have initiated contempt proceedings against the federal government and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for failing to hold the Islamabad LG elections.
The ECP and the federal government were sued for contempt of court in a consultation by the PTI Islamabad leadership for failing to hold the Islamabad LG elections.
The IHC will hear the contempt defence on Saturday morning. According to a PTI spokesperson, ECP will be held accountable for disobeying the IHC order.
PTI leader Ali Nawaz Awan conferred with the legal team before submitting a complaint for contempt.
Also suing the ECP for contempt was Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). Due to IHC regulations, voting must thus begin this morning at 8:00 am. ECP will file a lawsuit if they don’t start polling today.
In opposition to the IHC’s decision to hold the Islamabad LG elections on December 31, the ECP and the federal government filed an intra-court challenge.
For 10 to 15 days so that they can prepare for the LG elections, the election commission would ask.

Elections for the LG in Islamabad were mandated for December 31 by the court after accepting PTI and JI petitions.
The high court earlier turned down PTI and JI’s request to put off the elections for the LG in Islamabad.
According to Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, it is unconstitutional to postpone the LG elections.
MNAs get government development money, he claimed. The local government should manage development funding instead. Local administrations were not funded by the previous administration.
