Pakistan’s efforts to combat mpox have intensified as Peshawar reported its fourth case on Sunday, sparking concerns that the city may be emerging as a hotspot for the virus.
The most recent case involves a 47-year-old man who tested positive after being placed in isolation by Border Health Services on August 29. The patient had recently returned from the Gulf region, heightening fears about the virus spreading through travelers arriving from the Middle East.
“This marks the fifth mpox case reported this year in the country and the fourth since the WHO declared mpox a global health emergency,” stated Federal Director General of Health, Dr. Shabana Saleem, on Sunday.
Dr. Saleem expressed deep concern over the resurgence of the virus in Peshawar, stressing the need for immediate action to curb its transmission.
“Peshawar is showing signs of becoming an epicenter for mpox cases,” Dr. Saleem remarked. “This is an alarming trend, and we are intensifying our efforts to prevent further spread.”
In response, authorities have implemented stringent screening protocols at all airports to contain the virus. “We are not taking any risks. Robust screening systems are now operational nationwide,” Dr. Saleem reassured, highlighting the government’s commitment to protecting public health.
Federal and provincial health officials are working closely to monitor the situation, ensuring that prompt and effective measures are in place.
“We are working tirelessly to ensure all preventive measures are active and effective,” Dr. Saleem continued. “The Ministry of Health is keeping a close watch on developments and is ready to respond swiftly to any new cases.”
The surge in mpox cases in Peshawar has raised alarms among health experts and the general public, leading to calls for increased awareness and stricter travel guidelines.
Dr. Saleem also urged the public to stay vigilant and adhere to health advisories, particularly for those returning from high-risk regions. “Public cooperation is essential to stop the spread of mpox,” she cautioned. “Together, we can prevent this virus from gaining a stronger foothold.
