SEOUL: According to its official media, KCNA, North Korea denounced the Group of Seven nations on Tuesday, calling them a “remnant of the Cold War” that instigates conflicts for their own gain and infringes upon the sovereignty of other nations.
North Korea criticises G7: In a joint statement released after their meeting in Tokyo last week, Jo Chol Su, the director general of Pyongyang’s foreign ministry’s Department of International Organisations, denounced the G7 foreign ministers for “slandering” the nation’s exercise of “self-defensive and legitimate sovereignty.”
In a united statement, the G7 denounced North Korea’s missile launches and arms sales to Russia, urged for humanitarian pauses in the Israel-Hamas conflict, and reiterated support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
According to KCNA, Jo stated, “G7, which has caused and fomented the recent international crisis, says this or that to find fault with independent sovereign states.”
“The G7 is simply the biggest threat to international peace and security and the biggest obstacle to the creation of a just international order.”
Jo claimed that the group cannot speak for the whole world but rather defends the interests of a select few, pointing out that the US provides lethal weaponry to Ukraine so that it may “deliberately destroy peace and stability” in Europe. Jo further charged that Washington was “conniving at and fomenting” Israel’s horrific killing of civilians in Gaza while “shielding” it.
“Its existence is no longer justified,” Jo remarked. “Deconstructing the G7, the relic of the Cold War, will be the first step towards resolving the current international crisis and bringing about world peace,”
North Korea issued the declaration concurrently with South Korea hosting delegates from 17 UN Command (UNC) members responsible for upholding the armistice that concluded the Korean War.
It was anticipated that the discussions on Tuesday will reaffirm the commitment to counter any provocation by North Korea.
