The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has declared that it will not participate in the local government elections that are set to take place today, January 15, in three divisions of Sindh, including Karachi and Hyderabad, according to ARY News.
MQM-P convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said at a news conference in Karachi that the party has chosen to boycott the local government (LG) elections in protest of the ‘fake’ delineation of constituencies and voter lists.
Khalid Maqbool stated that “till January 15 we left no stone unturned to deliver justice to this city,” adding that the local body elections were already rigged.
The MQM-P convener criticised the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), saying that it was the watchdog’s duty to monitor constituencies but that it had fallen short.
He reiterated that constituency delineations and voter lists for the LG elections were false, adding that the courts had urged us to contact the provincial administration and the electoral commission. Without the assistance of MQM, the federal government could not have been established, he said.
Siddiqui responded to a query by stating that they were fighting for the citizens’ rights. He pleaded with the populace to back the party’s choice, saying, “We are boycotting the election due to unfairness and the electoral commission’s behaviour.”
Siddiqui asserted that no one should be permitted to rig the elections and that “these LG polls will not help the citizens.” The convener of the MQM-P also declared that his party would protest today’s elections.
