Torrential rain, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, lashed parts of Sindh on Friday night, inundating low-lying areas and bringing routine life to a standstill. The heavy downpour affected cities including Hyderabad, Matiari, Tando Allahyar, and Bhit Shah.
Impact on Infrastructure and Daily Life
The heavy showers caused significant disruptions across the province. The smooth flow of traffic was severely affected, with many roads submerged by rainwater. Electricity breakdowns were reported in numerous areas as the rain began, plunging large parts of Hyderabad into darkness when 130 feeders tripped.
Flooding in Low-Lying Areas
Residents in low-lying areas faced severe challenges as rainwater entered their homes, adding to their woes. The flooding caused by the rain further disrupted daily activities, making it difficult for residents to navigate through the submerged streets.
Meteorological Forecast
Earlier this week, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had forecasted rains across the country from July 16 to 21, with moderate monsoon currents likely to penetrate from the Arabian Sea. According to the Met Office, all four provinces, as well as regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit Baltistan (GB), are expected to experience rain-wind and thundershowers under the influence of this weather system.

Punjab/Islamabad
Rain, wind, and thundershowers are expected in various regions of Punjab and Islamabad, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, and several others from July 17 to 20. Monsoon downpours are also predicted in Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, DG Khan, Multan, and surrounding areas from July 17 to 19.
Sindh
In Sindh, mainly hot and humid weather is expected in most districts. However, rain-wind and thundershowers are predicted for Mithi, Sanghar, Umarkot, Tharparkar, Mirpur Khas, Badin, Sajawal, Thatta, Karachi, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Qamber Shahdadkot, Larkana, Dadu, and Padidan on July 18 and 19.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected to experience rain-wind and thundershowers in regions such as Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Bajaur, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, and several others from July 16 to 21.
Balochistan
In Balochistan, mainly hot and humid weather is forecast for most districts. Rain-wind and thundershowers are expected in the north/eastern parts, including Khuzdar, Kalat, Lasbella, Awaran, Ziarat, Zhob, Barkhan, Musa Khel, Shirani, Kohlu, Harnai, Naseerabad, and Jaffarabad this week.
