Argentina won the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Sunday after upsetting defending champions France 4-2 on penalties, following a dramatic 3-3 draw after extra time.
FIFA World Cup 2022 argentina goalie Emiliano Martinez saved Kingsley Coman’s penalty and Aurelien Tchouameni blasted wide to give Argentina their first global title since 1986, and third overall.
Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the span of two minutes, including a penalty kick in the 80th minute, to help France rally from two goals behind to tie the game over the course of 90 minutes.
The France striker scored his hat-trick in the 118th with another spot-kick after Argentina’s Lionel Messi had touched in for a 3-2 lead in the 109th.
Messi’s successful conversion of a 23rd-minute penalty gave Argentina a 2-0 lead in the opening period. Messi was making his record-breaking 26th World Cup appearance.
Through a brilliant four-pass counterattack, they scored again. Alexis MacAllister’s cutback found Angel Di Maria, who finished well.
Hugo Lloris of France parried Lautaro Martinez’s effort, but Messi of Argentina scored from close range to give Argentina a 3-2 advantage in extra time. France appeared to be the more likely team to continue and win the game.
But two minutes into extra time, Montiel gave up a penalty for handball, adding additional drama.
Mbappe, a teammate of Messi’s at Paris Saint-Germain, stepped forward to convert a second penalty kick to force overtime and overtime penalties.
