ECP Announce schedule for elections in Punjab: The calendar for the general elections in Punjab and the by-elections for the six open seats in the National Assembly was made public by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday.
After examining the dates suggested by the Election Commission of Pakistan earlier this month, President Dr. Arif Alvi approved April 30 as the date for holding the provincial assembly elections.
The president made the announcement after the ECP wrote to him recommending a polling date between April 30 and May 7, 2023. The proposed dates were made in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling that the elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa must be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the assemblies.
The electoral authority posted the schedule on Twitter, adding that the returning officer (RO) will release the public notice on March 11 and that candidates can submit their nomination papers from March 12 to March 14.
The last day for the RO to review the nomination papers will be March 22, while the names of the nominees will be made public on March 15.
The ECP has designated March 27 as the last date for filing appeals against the RO’s rulings, with April 3 as the last date for resolving appeals by the Appellate Tribunal.
On April 4, the updated list of candidates will be released, and on April 5, candidates will be able to withdraw their candidature papers. After that, a new updated candidate list will be released.
Election day is April 30, and the ECP will assign election emblems to the candidates on April 6.
The notification stated that the deadline for submitting a priority list for reserved seats, including seats for women and minorities, was March 1st.
