Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq became the 15th prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) by securing 48 votes.
Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq: The change happened following Sardar Tanveer Ilyas of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) disqualification by the AJK High Court in a contempt case.
The AJK High Court ruled Ilyas incapable of holding any public office and mandated elections to be conducted to elect his replacement as prime minister. The court made the ruling after summoning Ilyas before the supreme court and high court of AJK for employing a “threatening tone” in one of his remarks.
Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq stated in his first legislative address after being elected that he had received support from both PDM and PTI members during his election campaign as an independent candidate. Haq was a joint candidate for the PTI forward group and the opposition.
In the assembly, AJK President Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry formed a forward bloc in defiance of his own party.
Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq, after being elected, stated in his first legislative address that he was an independent candidate and received support from both PDM and PTI members during his election campaign.
Additionally, Chaudhry connected with the opposition parties and developed a power-sharing plan with them. The new AJK PM pledged to work for the general welfare and threatened to resign if he didn’t succeed.
Anwar-ul-Haq was not the PTI’s candidate, according to former AJK prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf president Sardar Ilyas Tanveer, who also ‘ditched’ Imran Khan as party leader.
Tanveer asserted that Chaudhry formed a forward bloc and requested assistance from the opposition to win the election of AJK PM.
The previous PM added that Imran Khan has not yet revealed the name of the AJK PM.
