A day after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) held a high-profile rally in Islamabad, several federal ministers and senators condemned PTI leader Ali Amin Gandapur for his controversial remarks during the event. The rally, aimed at demanding the release of PTI founder Imran Khan, witnessed clashes and a violation of the event’s deadline despite heavy security.
During his speech, Gandapur warned that if Imran Khan wasn’t released within one to two weeks, PTI would take matters into its own hands, even announcing plans for a rally in Lahore. His comments drew sharp criticism, with Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar accusing him of issuing empty threats and criticizing Gandapur’s handling of militancy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
At a press conference alongside Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam, Tarar condemned Gandapur’s remarks, accusing him of targeting Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz out of frustration over the failed rally. Muqam also criticized Gandapur’s “shameful” language and accused him of using KP’s resources for the rally, stating that Gandapur had disrespected Pakhtoon cultural values.
KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi called for action against those responsible for vandalism during the event and criticized Gandapur for failing to address terrorism in his province. He suggested that Gandapur was either unwilling or unable to act against the growing unrest.
Senator Sherry Rehman, Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), also condemned Gandapur’s remarks, accusing PTI of promoting violence and chaos. She questioned PTI’s approach, asking if the party wanted to run the justice system through rallies. Rehman noted that while PPP leaders had also faced imprisonment, the party never threatened to free its leaders through violence.
PML-N Senator Talal Chaudhry echoed the criticism, warning that Gandapur would face legal consequences for his actions. He pledged that the law would prevail and hinted that Gandapur could face jail time for the clashes between PTI workers and police at the rally. Chaudhry also referenced a blog in the Times of Israel, implying outside support for Imran Khan.
