As former prime minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas was disqualified in a court contempt case, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is anticipated to elect a new leader of the House today (Monday).
AJK Assembly elect new PM today: As a result of political squabbling in the area, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the opposition alliance were unable to decide on candidates for the job, forcing the House to postpone three times already.
Khawaja Farooq, Azhar Sadiq, and Anwarul Haq are among the names the Imran Khan-led party is considering, although it has not yet settled on one.
Since AJK President Barrister Sultan Mahmood announced a forward block, the PTI’s chances of retaking the top spot in the AJK Assembly are minimal. The names of Chaudhry Mohammad Rasheed, Chaudhry Ikhlaq, and Malik Zafar have been suggested by the Barrister group for the position.
The unified opposition is anticipated to support the PTI’s front block in order to oppose Imran Khan’s candidate in the meantime. Sources said that the opposition had given the dissidents the go-ahead, although no official declaration has yet been made.
“Former AJK Prime Minister Barred from Public Office for Contempt of Court”
In the parliamentary assembly, the opposition’s vote total would increase to 26 if they reached an agreement with the Sultan Mehmood group, while 27 votes are needed to win the PM’s seat. The vote of Sardar Ateeq Ahmed of the Muslim Conference is crucial in this circumstance.
Tanveer Ilyas Khan was barred from holding any public office by the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) High Court on April 11 after he was found guilty of contempt of court.
After he attacked the court’s stay orders at a public assembly, a full bench ruled against him on a contempt notice. The former premier also made an appearance before the court and expressed his complete regret for disparaging the judiciary.
The bench, however, rejected his apologies, removed him from office as prime minister of the AJK, and terminated his membership in the AJK assembly. He is the first prime minister of the AJK to be expelled by a court.
Later, he petitioned the AJK Supreme Court, which rejected his request for the court to stay its ruling and disqualified him from the contempt case.
After Sardar Tanveer Ilyas was ousted, senior minister Khawaja Farooq Ahmed is now serving as Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s acting prime minister.
